Girl in the Machine

Thursday 9th February 7.45pm

Stef Smith’s ground-breaking play Girl In The Machine explores our unease over digital intrusiveness and pushes it a step into the future in this ‘gripping sci-fi in the manner of Black Mirror’ (The Guardian), which returns after a successful regional tour in 2022.

Owen and Polly are in successful careers, wildly in love and ready to take on the world.  But when a mysterious new technology, promising a break from the daily grind, creeps into everyone’s phones, their world is turned upside down.

As the line between physical and digital dissipates, Owen and Polly are forced to question whether their definitions of reality and freedom are the same.

The Shodyssey

Wednesday 22nd February 7.45pm

Assembleth Theatre take you on a journey through the Trojan War as you’ve never seen it before. The sort-of truth behind Achilles heel, the golden watermelon of Paris, the twelve accidental labours of Hercules and more will be revealed as the history of one of the most important conflicts of the ancient world comes to life.

“A very funny 60-minute romp through mythology with much stomping about and clattering of swords. There’s carnage, chaos and a huge amount of humour as five Assembleth Theatre populate Greece, Troy and a doorless wooden horse.” Ranked in Top South West picks 2017 British Theatre Guide

Blow Down

Wednesday 1st March 7.30pm

A funny and poignant play which marks the recent demolition of the iconic cooling towers at Ferrybridge Power Station, in the words of those who lived and worked beneath them.  Scripted by award-winning playwright Garry Lyons and based on stories collected from the local community in Ferrybridge and Knottingley, Blow Down is an hilarious, gritty and thought-provoking show with music about a typical post-industrial Yorkshire town.  From the raucous seventies to recession and decline in the 2000s, it tells the tale of the area through the experiences of people who’ve lived there, offering surprising insights, authenticity and humour.

The Island

Tuesday 7th March 7.45pm

South Africa 1973, Robben Island, the top security prison where Nelson Mandela was held.

John and Winston are sharing a cell. They survive through a mixture of solidarity, bickering, laughter and defiance. They are preparing a production of Antigone for the other prisoners, but Winston has trouble remembering the lines and isn’t sure he wants to play Antigone. The two men’s sense of brotherhood has kept them going for years, then John hears that he’s going to be released…

The Island is one of the most famous plays of the second half of the 20th Century and has been seen all over the world. A rich, boisterous, funny, moving piece of theatre, it is a hymn to the human spirit and a cry for freedom everywhere.

Run, Rebel

Tuesday 28th March 7pm

Amber is trapped – by her family’s rules, by their expectations, by her own fears. But on the running track she is completely free. As her body speeds up, the world slows down. And the tangled, mixed up lines in her head get s t r a i g h t e r . . .

It’s time to start a revolution: for her mother, for her sister, for herself.

Run, Amber. Run.

Run Rebel is a world premier adaptation of Manjeet Mann’s celebrated novel.
