MAYPOLE DANCING WITH ELIZABETH & BOB LAWSON

About the show

Erecting a pole, decorated by garlands at the start of summer is one of our most ancient customs.  Found across Northern Europe, they originally marked the place where parties happened because there weren’t indoor spaces for large gatherings until the eighteenth century.  In England, long ribbons were added during the nineteenth century and maypole dancing was born.

If you’ve never done maypole dancing before, it is brilliant. We’ll be having a go at several different ways of weaving the ribbons into patterns as we dance.  My workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities.  I’ll also be giving tips to anyone who wants to learn how to run a session themselves, such as in a school.  Maypole dancing is very accessible but deceptively tricky to get right.  Prepare to get tangled!
