SOPHIA STRINGS

About the show

A full-length concert of light classics, jazz, dance, tunes from films, musicals and operas as well as Ukrainian folk music.

AN ALNWICK MUSIC SOCIETY OUTREACH EVENT

As well as bringing high quality professional musicians to perform great chamber music in Alnwick, the Music Society is committed to a programme of education and outreach. Our latest outreach event is a full-length Sunday afternoon concert of lighter music in Alnwick Playhouse.

Sophia Strings play a wide range of well-known music. They love to entertain, and particularly enjoy reaching people who would not usually think of listening to live string music.

Professional violinists Kostia Tsepkov and Iryna Zagorna studied violin at the prestigious Kiev Tchaikovsky Conservatoire and then joined the world-famous Ukraine National Opera Orchestra. They founded Sophia Strings in 2017 when they came to the UK. Although they spoke little English, a shared love of music overcame the language barrier, and they were soon performing string quartets with English musicians Jill Russell and Penny Jones at events around their home towns of Darlington and Richmond.

For several years, Kostia was a soloist with the Ukraine Chamber Orchestra, regularly performing concertos in Ukraine and internationally.

Besides being an accomplished classical violin player, Iryna has a strong interest in Ukrainian folk music, and she has arranged Ukrainian folk music for the quartet.

They will perform with Iryna’s talented daughter, Sofia Nikolaiets, who has a singing scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music.
