THE MELSONS

About the show

“The Melsons” is a coming together of two beloved northern English harmony quartets: Melrose Quartet, from Sheffield, and The Wilsons Family, from Teeside (EFDSS Gold Badge Awardees 2017). Expect to raise your voice in chorus with one of the finest folk harmony ensembles ever assembled in the UK.

Having admired each other’s musical exploits over the years, they were asked at short notice to step in together to provide a finale to the 2018 Hartlepool Folk Festival when their dear friend and mentor Roy Bailey was unable to attend due to illness. The resultant set list came together organically from within the two groups’ respective repertoires, with arrangements and harmonies falling into place naturally and quickly. The resulting wall of sound was immediately exciting, and the reaction from the audience was extremely satisfying.

Since that first collaboration, there has been increasing requests for The Melsons to perform – headline concerts at Whitby, Hartlepool, Sidmouth, Upton-upon-Severn and Cleckheaton soon followed – and although both Melrose Quartet, including the numerous musical collaborations of Nancy, Kerr & James Fagan, Jess & Richard Arrowsmith, and The Wilson Family, have increasingly busy schedules, they delight in the opportunity to get together in front of an audience, and relish the chance of sharing their Melsongs!
